Subject: [*] Checkermania 1.04 Demo
CHECKERMANIA is a magical twist on the old game of checkers. The
introduction of magic spells has transformed it into a very exciting
and more challenging game. In addition to magic, a "Return the Flag"
variation was added to eliminate any chance of stalemate. Two players
can play against each other or you can match your wits against the
computer. It's great fun for all ages.
CHECKERMANIA has superb color graphics and sound. For machines not
equipped with color, it will also run in B&W.
This program is a demonstration version of CHECKERMANIA. Try it out
and if you like it you can order the fully functional version directly
>From Majestic Software for only $12. Just use the on-line order form
by clicking the "How To Order..." button in CHECKERMANIA's opening
window. This will provide you all the instructions needed to order.
Some of CHECKERMANIA's features have been disabled in this
demonstration version; but enough have been left in to allow you to
see if you really like it. CHECKERMANIA's on-line help explains all
the features of the full working version (so you can see what you're
missing!). Also, the "Custom Setup" and "Preferences" windows have
Balloon Help.

FS-ATC 1.1
Air Traffic Controller for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator
Macintosh version 4.0.
Here is the second release of the first air traffic controller that
operates with Microsoft Flight Simulator Macintosh version 4.0. It uses
some undocumented Apple Events to find out position of aircraft and
sends messages to the pilot with Notification manager.
This version fixes some bugs found in version 1.0 and adds some
new features. The name is changed from ATC to FS-ATC, because of
a name collision with existing game known as "Air Traffic
Controller". This software has nothing to do with it.
FS-ATC 1.1 is released as shareware.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not a pilot myself, I wrote the program just for fun.

Blurb suggestion:
This game is based on Pac-Man - with a twist. You are Mr. Happyweed!,
going around a screen eating marijuana leaves and various other drugs
which give you extra speed and special powers. Your goal is to finish
as many levels as you can while escaping the Campus Police. Requires
at least 16 colors, 800K of free RAM, System 7, and at least a 640x480
screen. Works best with 256 colors.

JWord-Lists is a collection of text documents each containing one word
per line, the words having been chosen from the union of a small
collection of American English "dictionaries" found on computer
systems running under the Unix operating system. The union itself is
included as a document named "words". The other documents are subsets
of "words": lower case letter words, upper case letter words, mixed
case letter words, words containing one or more digits, words
containing exactly i letters (i=1, 2, ... ) and randomly chosen
subsets of these documents. Totally useless, unless you are into

Subject: [*] MultiSession1.00
MultiSession is a program that allows you to have multiple windows open over
a serial connection. It is similar to MacLayers but uses a different set of
tradeoffs (Error correction and flow control gained at the expense of
responsiveness and full bandwidth utilization).
This version has a couple of problems: Downloading must be done from a
MultiSession window (since the download error correction doesn't work right
yet). The UNIX upload program doesn't work at all. Also, there is an
occasional error in downloading which might corrupt a file. (I'm
working on it.)
So why am I releasing buggy software? Well, I'm losing Internet access real
soon now and I won't have access to UNIX either, so I want to get at least
something "out there" as soon as possible. UNIX source code is included, so
perhaps someone else will come up with ideas...
Oh, yeah. The program requires system 7; the UNIX part runs on Ultrix and
god knows what else (I sure don't...)

Subject: [*] School Stat 1.0.2 - Statistics app
Enclosed please find a bug-fix update to info-mac/app/school-stat-10.hqx.
Please address all correspondence to the author.
This is a shareware program containing interactive statistical
software. It is designed primarily for schools (hence the name!),
especially teachers who wish to show how probability distributions
can be brought alive with Macintosh graphics. It goes much further
though, and has a spreadsheet, sorting, arithmetic and mathematical
transformations (including N scores), statistical tests including
descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, paired and independent
comparisons (parametric and non-parametric), correlations, linear
regression, contingency tables and more. It has a graphing facility
for scatterplots, histograms, boxplots, stem and leaf diagrams, and
pie charts. A log window keeps tally of your analyses. It accepts 30
columns by 1000 data points in each and will perform any of the
functions on your own data. It includes both static probability
tables (eg normal, inverse normal, t- and F-distribution, chi-square
distribution, and others) and active tables which will plot the
distributions and fill in the specified (by the user) probabilities
as visible areas under the actual curve. These are in real time and
have to be seen to be believed! A fully interactive help system is
available (modeless windows) at all times accessed from the Apple
menu (Command-/).
Compatibility: It is compatible with Macintoshes with system 6.05 and
above, including system 7, and will run on any screen depth, though
to get flicker free drawing in the Active Tables, you must have Color
QuickDraw installed in your system folder, and to run on depths
greater than 8 bit (ie 256 colors) you must increase the memory
partition allocated to SchoolStat(tm) to at least 960K!

Evolution Log
v1.01
#Calculator: attempts to obtain logarithms of zero was
associated with a fatal error which has now been corrected (NAN error
returned).
#Linear regression difficulties with equipotential data in one sample
now correctly returns a correct equation or error message.
#Correlations for similar data sets now are returned as 1.0
v1.02
#Smooth active tables now implemented using an offscreen GWorld
only if Color QuickDraw is installed in system folder (otherwise
SchoolStat(tm) defaults back to the flickering method). This makes for
visually aesthetic probability graph updates. Support for thousands
(and millions) of colors tested on only a few recent machines, with
optimum RAM partition probably at least 960K. Importing of full color
PICT images into the Graph window is supported in these environments
if there is enough memory.
#Initial window size has been reduced to fit on compact Macintosh
screens.
#Axis labels on Scatter and Linear plots are now correct. Thanks go
to Joe Strout (and others) for pointing this error out.

Hello dear moderators,
[I like this man! -Gordon]
I would like to post the latest for now on version of Spectra-v0.9.
Spectra is a program for simulation of IR-, Raman-, and other spectra.
I see that most of the articles which came out this and past years uses
simply lines (not spectra). Here, I suggest them to use my Spectra. It's
easy to use and friendly package. I'm currently working Spectra, since
I decided not to do Molecular Designer for a year(I'm taking CS classes so
I guess, I can go back to MolDis in the Winter).
I'd be happy if you can send me a message that you're using Spectra
and want to see new versions. BTW, I can keep in mind that you're using it
and send the new versions direct to you (binhexed Application).
I'm currently working on movable strings so that you can create a string
and move it, it could be a title or whatever..
Thank you.
Please, send your mails to dmitry@chemistry.chem.utah.edu
Thanks again.

which will let you change resolution on the fly. You have to get the newer
version which supports the Q800 and Centrises. NEC 5FG also support the
higher Apple 21" resolution (1152x870) - I assume yours is not the newer
(and cheaper) 5FGe model which doesn't support the higher resolution.

I tried this on a Centris 650, but I think it should work on a 610 or an 800.
Get an extension cable for your video, length about four inches is
convenient.
I paid $12 each for a pair of them, DB15-DB15. Unsolder pins 4, 10, and 7 from
the female end and pull them out of the cable at the male end so you can get
at
them. At startup the computer will examine these three wires.
If none are connected to anything it will shut down the builtin video.
If 4 is grounded it will generate video for a 13S tube.
If 4 is hooked to 10 it will do 16S.
If 4 is hooked to 7 it will do 19S.
I just hook together the wires with a paper clip to get the resolution I
need.
Someday I may hook up a switch instead. ThereUs probably a software solution,
but I donUt know it.

Subject: 160 MB backups ? Tape? ->sparc?
We are getting some machines with 160 Mbyte hard drives. In the past
we have been using DataPak removable harddrives which are costing us
L100 each (well over US$200 at current exchange rates) and hold 45
Mbytes of data. This is clearly suboptimal if we end up with full 160
MB drives to back up.
I am trying to find out about alternative methods of backing up. I'm
interested in possible hardware and/or software solutions. One
possibility which would be quite cheap for us would be if we could use
the tape drive on the SPARC station which is connected to the network.
I believe the SPARC is on the internet, and we talk to it via mac
TCP/IP. Alternatively, some compression method that ended up small
enough to fit on the 45 MegByte removable hard drives would also be an
option.
I would appreciate any suggestions people might mail to me about
alternatives, either ones that work, or ones you've tried that were
really suboptimal ;-).
The new machines are LC III's, but it would be nice if the method we
end up with is generally applicable to all Macs, some Mac II's, an SE,
and a plus.
Thanks for any help. Please mail to me personally, and I will
summarize and post if there is interest.

I've used InterFax version 1.1 with system 6.0.x without any problems; it
even worked fine when I switched over to system 7.0. I am presently using
version 1.2.3 and that has also worked without any mishap ;-) I believe we
may be entering a rather strage era in computing where older versions of
some software work better than newer versions (and where newer versions
introduce bugs and don't seem to offer any spectacular increase in
capability). We have been conditioned to feel somehow inadequate and
unfulfilled unless we have the newest version (1.2.3 verus 1.2.2) of very
piece of software. Getting off on a few new twitches to a piece of code
seems a bit flaky ;-) In this case my suggestion is to downgrade rather
than upgrade and thus save some bucks and some hassle.

Subject: Apple Refund Problem
Hello to all in NetLand...
I've got a serious problem I'd like to address, and I'm opening the
floor to suggestions. Please e-mail to me, and I'll keep the net
updated on my progress.
First, the background:
In November '92, I ordered a Mac IIvx with the new 14" monitor,
Extended Keyboard II, QuickTime Starter Kit, and Mac PC Exchange. I
had to order through my school, since I am a student and needed the
discount. My system finally arrived on 11 Feb 93, a day or two after
the release of the Centris 650 and company, which was accompanied my
large price cuts on the IIvx.
I got in contact with my local Apple Rep here in Champaign-Urbana,
who does a lot of Education work (I work in one of the computer labs
she has a lot of contact with). Through her, I was able to get a
commitment (over the phone AND in print, through e-mail) from Apple
to a refund of about $600-700. They said the policy was to refund
everyone whose IIvx SHIPPED the week of the price cuts, so I should
have qualified, since my machine left the last Apple depot on 08 Feb
93 (a Monday). She even forwarded me e-mail from a "Mark" at the
Austin Support Center, who said that the paperwork should be done by
"the end of the week"--this was 23 March 93.
Guess why I'm writing.
No refund in sight; I'm constantly checking with my credit card
company.
I've been in further contact with the Apple Rep, a Laura Walston, but
she has not replied to my latest letter (of 16 April, or
thereabouts). While I will continue to push her for assistance, I
want to take things to the next level so I can get my money back.
This refund has been about two months in coming, and I really need
it.
My question is--who do you suggest I go to next? I'm going to call
Apple Customer Service's 1-800 number, but I also would like to get
an address where I can send all my hardcopy documentation (invoices,
e-mail printouts, etc, etc) to support my claim.
If any of you could help me out in this, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks a lot!!

Subject: app to combine aliases (Q)
Does anyone know of an app that can combine two or
more aliases so that several files/apps can be opened
by simply double clicking _one_ super-alias? I am aware of
Stapler, but I'm not too happy with it because it uses
(temporarily) 500K of RAM to do its thing. What I'm thinking
of is a way of simply combining aliases (pointers) to several
files; such a super-alias should work like vanilla aliases,
and not consume any RAM to do its thing.
Does such a beast exist?

The "price difference" is based on the difference between the current retail
prices of the two products. However, there's more to consider. Upgrades have
the lowest priority for shipment. I've been trying to upgrade two 50 MHz 68030
PowerCache cards to 33 MHz 68040 cards for over three months. Each time I
call,
I'm told they're not available yet and that I should try again in a couple of

me the promised upgrades.
If you're considering purchase of a DayStar accelerator because of their
upgrade policy, I'd think again.

Hello, all...
I just downloaded the great DoubleScroll control panel from the

1) Most annoying of all, it makes the sliders INVISIBLE in MS Word

but this is truly an undesireable situation...
2) Unless I force the file to load LAST at startup, it totally
screws with the placement of startup icons on the screen (Mac IIvx,
System 7.1, with one complete row plus four more icons on a 13"
monitor--and don't lecture me about too many INITs!!). Anybody have
any good workarounds for this?
Anyone else have these problems, or is it just me?
Until the MS Word problem gets fixed, I'm going to have to stop using
the program. The second is just a minor annoyance, but I'd like to
see it fixed, too. Any hope for an update soon?...

Hate to say it, but did you check the Eudora Doc's? Appendix D in the
doc's for Version 1.31 discusses Dialup Eurodra using scripts & a server
program called "srialpop". You can get srialpop from "ftp.qualcomm.com"
where Eudora now lives. NB: I couldn't get it to work. (I'm not a
computer scientist, just a manager who has to deal with an uninterested IS
shop. Such is life in the Big City.)
Now for the good news, if your mail server supports SLIP, you're much
better off. I'm using SLIP on my Mac at home with a Supra Too Fast modem.
(I'm planning to get our IS shop to install SLIP on our PeeCee notebooks
computers to give the users the same interface on the notebooks as they
have on their desktops...hopefully.) The Eudora Q & A stack, available
>From ftp.qualcomm.com, talks about & gives tips on using SLIP with Eudora.
It gives several sources for SLIP for the Mac. Bad news is there are no
public domain versions of SLIP and you need Apple's MacTCP. Good news is
the you can buy MacTCP & SLIP for the Mac as part of the VersaTilities s/w
pkg (Synergy S/W - they sell VersaTerm) for the same list prices as MacTCP
alone from Apple. Check the usual mail order houses for the best street
price.
Good Luck!

NuBus Macs--namely, does such a beast exist? He wanted to avoid
unplugging the MIDI interface currently in his modem port when he

While I have NOT seen ANY internal modems for desktop Macs AT ALL
(a major oversight of manufacturers, IMHO), I would suggest that
Aric get one of the serial-port switching devices that are currently
available. One particular device is available from mail order
vendors for about $130.00 (sorry, but I can't remember the exact
name...); check magazines like MACWORLD and MacUser for reviews
(within the past six months).
These devices include Control Panels that allow you to choose the
port that's "alive;" from what I understand, if the software supports
Apple's Serial Port Manager (or some such beast, anyway), ALL of the
ports can be active at once.
BTW, do you have anything in your printer port? Most telecom
software I've seen can support sending info throught the printer
port, too, so this may be a MUCH less expensive option.
Take care, and I hope this helps!!

I've been thinking of getting Public Utilities. The more automatic nature
of it appeals to me, since I am getting tired of running Norton and Disk First

I have not EVER had a problem requiring a reformat since I started doing

weird stuff in my system folder and trying shareware that crashes :-) The
most
amazing thing is the number of problems it catches - is all the software out
there so bad that it can't keep the data structures in some semblance of

What's the general opinion on Public Utilities? Any weirdness like
Norton/Disk First Aid interaction that requires you to run DFA last? Is it
better or worse than Norton?

A friend of mine just bought a used Mac IIci from a local dealer. The
dealer said it had been a demo model in the showroom for the last two
and a half years. The catch is that it only comes with a 30 day
warranty. So my question is this: How can you put a used IIci through
its paces to find out if it is sound before the warranty expires?
My normal advice to new computer purchasers is to leave the computer on
for a week or two, to see if any hardware problems surface. I'm afraid
to advise this to my friend, lest I hasten the demise of an old but sound
computer. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on that?
I have DiskBasher, but I've never used it to see if an untested hard drive
was sound. How useful would that be in this case?
Has anyone used Snooper, MacEKG or a related program to check out a used
computer? Would it be useful here?
I should mention that the computer appears to be basically sound. So are
these questions really worth worrying about at all, or should I tell my
friend not to worry too much about it?
Any advice or comments are welcome. Send correspondence either to info-mac
or to me directly; if I get enough private response, I'll summarize them

Subject: Launchable, but not copyable Apps from a Network
There is, however, another solution to the problem of allowing people to
launch applications, but not copy them, it does however involve the use of
System 6 for a brief moment...
Under System 7, you canNOT flip/set/toggle the protect bit of an
application, whether it be to turn it on or to turn it off. Thus, use a
System 6 setup, and toggle the bit using DiskTop, or MacTools, and you will
have now protected your program from finder-copying....thus if a person
tries to copy it, the Finder will say that 'A file cannot be copied because
of copy-protection.' Very simple, and no other applications needed to
prevent copying. If you make the folder read-only, then people can't delete
it either. System 7 respects that Protect 'bit' and thus you are protected
>From anybody copying the application.
Of course there are always ways to beat almost any copy-protection scheme,
but this is quick and simple to set up and implement.

My thanks to Steve Jaffe (stjaffe@vaxsar.vassar.edu) for answering my
question (rather the question of someone at Microsoft whom I've already
relayed Steve's suggestion to).
I did get another message saying that one could make an app launchable
but uncopyable by setting the copy protection bit. Now this is something
I've been aware of for a while, but I always fought shy of asking about
it because I assumed the reason ResEdit doesn't allow you to toggle it is
because Apple want to keep copy protection a private thing which only
software houses and developers get to fiddle with. I was told that FWB's
Hard Disk Toolkit will actually toggle the copy protection bit but I don't
have that, so the idea's no use to me.
But since the subject has been broached, well I thought I'd ask and be
damned (maybe): where is this copy protection bit, and how can I toggle it
using a disk editor?

That's not even close to preemptive, and it seems very haphazard. I
for one don't like the idea of mysterious things going on in the
background when I'm not prepared for it. Mac memory management
makes it necessary for me to know when the machine might shuffle
around my data.
Good programming doesn't require magical compiler fixes to make things
run well. On the other hand, NO level of programming can turn the Mac
into a pre-emptive system. Maybe System 8? Or how about the Mac OS
for the PowerPC? Those of us that want real multi-tasking (and a Mac
OS) will just have to wait until Cupertino decides it's in their best
interest to give it to us *shrig*.

I would highly recommend Acta7 for such tasks. You can outline a document and
collapse sections with ease, click and drag to rearrange, and it exports to a
Word RTF file once it's organized. (It can also export to MacWrite, MacDraw,
MORE, WordPerfect, text, MailMerge, ThinkTank, and Works). It imports MORE,
text, scrapbook, and ThinkTank. For the lecturers among us, Aldus Persuasion
can import and export Acta outlines as well.
I've seen EndNote Plus in use for citations; some bibliographic services can
spit out references in a format that EndNote Plus can quickly import as
records
fully formatted (title, author, etc). I'm told you can then import the
references directly into your word processor as well.

Assuming your unix ps file does not contain any instructions, such as clear

Subject: Resubmission - Medical Image Database
Hello people,
I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS FOR U. I JUST GOT A LARGE
project dropped into my lap. The project is a medical image database.
They have one installed on a windows platform. What I am to do is to
build one on the 950. The jest of it is that the doctor will sit down
and choose from a list of criteria like what part of the body, what
type of tissue, and the like. The database will search out all the
images that fit the criteria, and list them. The doctor will have the
option of doing another search and add to the list of images that were
found. After all the images have been found, he can pick from the list
the one that they wish to view. All the images are on Laser Disk. I
thought of a couple commercial programs that would come close to the
criteria, but I need a custom interface. Questions:
1) I have set-up a few databases in Filemaker Pro, but know of no way
that FM can drive a Pioneer LD player. Is there any way that this can
be done.
2) I have see databases set up in Hypercard, but have little knowledge
in scripting in HC. Are there any example of such a database out
there? Is this the best way of doing it? Can I link HC with a DB
written in Fox Pro or Dbase using LD driver XCMDS? (i.e. do the
database in Dbase, and use HC as a front end.)
3) I know that there are LD drivers already written for Pioneer LD's,
where can I find them? Are there any here on the net? What about HC
XCMDS?
IF I am looking at this in the wrong fashion, they hey, any assistance
would be great. I know that there are a few doctors out there. Do u
have any input on some of the features that are needed?

Eric,
Do I have the project for you!!! If you follow this digest you will
remember the howls of anguish a few months ago when Apple announced that it
was going to start charging a bundle ($150 or so if I remember correctly)
for MacTCP. Here we have this interesting situation in which MicroSoft
(Windows NT) and IBM (OS/2) are moving toward including IP in their
standard distributions, and Apple is going the opposite direction. I claim
a PD or shareware IP stack for the MAC would be a perfect project, *and* a
public service.
Just as a cultural note, last summer when Merit published their list of
the 50 top names for nodes on the Internet (a side effect of their node
discovery project), it was pretty stunning. The list contained the
expected smattering of names of planets, cartoon characters and science
fiction references. But it also contained MAC1, MAC2, MAC3, and so on
down through about MAC10, if I remember right. There were a few SUNs and
such but nothing like the list of MACs. Of course, there is no way to know
how many of the other node names have Macs hiding behind them, but it was
clear the Mac is the most popular machine on the net. I claim this is in
large part because a cheap IP stack (Mac TCP) has made it the machine of
choice. If Apple continues down its current path, that status will soon
change. I'd like to see you pick up the gauntlet.

Subject: Talk*2*Me on appletalk remote access
I recently downloaded Talk*2*Me to see what it could do, and as
I read the documentation, it occurred to me that it may be exactly
what I've been looking for for quite a while.
Can anyone tell me the following, though?
1. At what frequency does it sample sounds? Is this selectable?
2. Will it work on something like Dial Up AppleTalk or netmodem?
Specifically, I've been looking for a Macintosh solution to the
problem of remote broadcasting for the two radio stations I work for.
If we need to broadcast from a point too far away from our base, we
have to use the phone, and then it sounds, well, like you're on the
phone.
I've been looking for a simple interface to allow one Mac to input
sound, compress it (this is automatic with MACE, right?), and then
shoot it down the phone line to another mac, which would then convert
the bits 'n' bytes to sound again, and, hopefully, it would sound a
lot better than a regular phone conversation. "Realtime" isn't that
important to me, but I'd like to be able to send a 30 second sound byte
in at least 30 seconds...
As for user interface, I'd like to just yell into one end, and it comes out
the other end. (a five second delay or something would certainly be
acceptable) That's why this AppleTalk "realtime" intercomm system cought
my attention.
I'm shopping for a powerbook, but right now I only have an SE/30, and
hence have no way to check it out. Is there someone out there who
uses Remote AppleTalk who'd be willing to try calling the office with
his powerbook?
It just occurs to me that if the internet TCP/IP appletalk link works out,
we could be using the internet for realtime talking... how long till THAT
gets policed?
In case anyone's wondering, Talk*2*Me _looks_ like a really nifty gizmo,
and can be found in the "app" directory of SUMEX.
Thanks for any help I get...please reply to the net, or to me, and I'll
post summaries.

Subject: Tip of the Year
What follows is my nomination for Macintosh Tip of the Year:
Free megabytes with every Mac.....
If you buy a Mac with a 40Mb Hard Disk (or 80, 160 etc.) and you compare its
size with that of another Mac hard drive ostensibly of the same size you will
see that both drives do indeed appear to have exactly the same capacity. But
then ask youself how often you've seen drives advertised that are exactly 40,
80 or 160 MB. Usually they're 42, 85 etc. Here's the good bit: Apple buy
their drives from the same manufacturers that everyone else uses, often
Seagate
or Quantum. They buy whatever drives are in plentiful supply, often the same
42 or 85 Mb drives. These are then installed in Macs on Apple's production
lines, formatted and localised for their ultimate destination marketplace.
But, and this is the really good bit, Apple only format these drives to the
advertised size, i.e. 40, 80, or 160 Mb etc. This means that Apple leave
EMPTY
SPACE ON EVERY HARD DISK. The amount of empty space will correspond to the
difference between the HD's manufactured size and the even number that Apple
have selected for use. On my 80Mb Classic II I found 3Mb lying unused. On a
friends 160Mb LC III there was _16_ Mb unused. This makes the follwing
procedure all the more worthwhile...
1. Backup ALL your files/apps/everything. Make sure the backup disks are
okay.
2. Restart your Mac with its Disk Tools Disk.
3. Start the application Apple HD SC Setup
4. Tell the this Setup program to reformat the Hard Disk. THIS WILL
EVERYTHING ON YOUR HARD DISK so make sure you'vebaked up everything
(including your User Dictionaries, preference files etc.).
4a. The process of reformatting the Hard Disk is fairly intuitive. You
may
wish to select the Custom Format option. If you do, you should drag
the partition indicator down to its full extent. This is what regains
the lost disk space.
5. Reinstall your system software from Apple's original disks. Restore
all backup disks to their former location.
6. Sit back and enjoy the extra space.
Caveat: This procedure worked fine for me, but clearly I'm not about to take
responsibility for some obscure problem that causes this procedure to fail on
anybody else's machine. Above All, ENSURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP EVERYTHING AND
THAT YOU HAVE A FULL SET OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE DISKETTES FOR YOUR MACHINE. If
you
fail to comply with those two aspects the whole thing WILL be a disaster.
Otherwise you should be okay.
As I say, on my machine, this cleared 3Mb that otherwise could not be used.
On
other machines the saving may be only slight. On some it may be vast. If you
like, you can run Apple HD SC Setup directly from your main hard disk just to
see if anything can be saved (To actually retrieve the Disk Space, however,
you must statup from the Disk Tools disk for your machine).
Sorry about the length of this posting. I'm sure that the rewards justify the
use of bandwidth.

* what sort of RAM do I need to buy?
I have investigated the manufacturer's upgrade but this is far too expensive
an
option.
Thanks for any help, in advance.

Subject: US modem use in GB
I am planning a move soon to Great Britain. I am wondering what
problems, if any, there are with interfacing modems sold in the U.S. fir
the U.S. phone system with the Great Britain phone system. Anyone with
any experience with use of U.S. modem in Great Britain or has any
information that might help, please respond directly to me at:

and I will summarize for the list.
Thank you.

Subject: which system error list to use (Q)
Does anyone have any definitive information as to which of
"SysErrTableDA 3.1" and "System Errors 7.0.1" is better? I've quickly
compared them and found that the application was based on an older
version (3.0?) of the DA, and the DA has a couple of codes (104
dsNeedToWriteBootBlocks and 105 dsNotEnoughRAMToBoot) not in the
application, but the application has additional support for printing,
etc.

Subject: X-Windows over phone lines
bobw@gdstech.grumman.com asked about running X-Windows over the phone line.
First, you need a fast modem (14.4 kbps is desireable). Then you need a
TCP/IP connection from the remote machine to your Mac. This could either
be a SLIP dial in connection to a networked SLIP server, or you could
use run MacTCP over AppleTalk REmote Access to a networked Macintosh with a
modem. The client SLIP software for the Mac is part of the VersaTerm Pro
package from Synergy software, and I believe that they sell it unbundled as
well. For X-Windows on the Mac you could use MacX and, alternatively, EXodus
(I think it is called). My experience is that the best way to do this,
however, is not to run X-windows over the network. I have rather large
graphics files (Postscript version is over 1MB, and they take a long time to
plot). SO, HERE IS A BETTER BUT MORE EXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE.
Get two Macs, one at home and one at work with a direct network connection.
Put AppleTalkRemoteAccess on both, and high speed modems on both. Then,
get Timbuktu for both Macs. Run X-Windows on the machine at work, and use
Timbuktu over the dial-in AppleTalk link so that the home Mac controls the
Mac at work. You will find that the X-Windows displayed on the work machine
are transferred by Timbuktu to your home machine much faster than if you
had run X-Windows directly on your home machine. I don't know why this is,
but I think that is some cases the X-Windows format must not be very efficient
for coding graphics, whereas the Timbuktu people must have done a very
excellent job in compressing the information displayed on the screen.

Subject: z-modem transfers
I monitor the info-mac archives and download files all the time, but I
often have problems getting files from my dialup UNIX space at the local
university to my home via zterm and my duo 230 (I had the same problems
before my duo)
For example, I recently tried to download the file "do-it-all-30.hqx" from
the app directory. I used the "get" command to get it over internet to my
university file space and then I use the "sz -w 8196 do-it-all-30.hqx"
command with zterm to have it downloaded to my computer at home. I am
using a standard Hayes compatible 9600 baud modem.
Things start out O.K.with the occasional Data CRC error @xxxxx, but then
after almost 50% of the download I get Hd CRC error @119808 and it repeats
itself until zterm finally gives up and I can't get the file.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how I
can resolve it?

Recently, someone posted that the Inside Macintosh books were Hypercard
Stacks at FTP.APPLE.COM. I found these OK, and I downloaded a couple of
them and then I tried to deHqx and expand these with Stufffit Expander.
The deHqx process went fine but it left me with a sit.7 file (I think),
something like that anyway. I then tried to expand this with Stuffit
Expander again.
Stuffit Expander opened the files fine, but then did nothing with them.
To make a long story into a short question, Is there something special that
I have to do with those files to be able to use them?
Please help me!
